Things to know before buying a Desktop/Laptop

Gadgets today are designed to look sleek, perform faster and last longer. The same applies to laptops. Most of us invest in one following the bandwagon of popularity of the brands giving lesser importance to reviews or technical know-how of the product.Things to-do or know before you set out to buy a laptop/desktop:

  1. Nature of your work
  2. Are you a user with heavy reliance on a laptop? Like a designer, video editor, animation artist and more.
  3. Or you are one of occasional users who would use it for basic MS office requirements, to watch movies, tune into music and browse the internet?

For Heavy users:
Current scenario, personally would recommend to keep a budget that’s slightly on the higher side. This is an investment that should ideally last you for minimum 3-4 years (that’s what an average expectancy of any gadget today is)
Whether MAC or Windows,

  1. Make sure you get it with SSD (256GB minimum) Minimum 16GB ram.
  2. Laptops come with default 8GB (2chips of 4GB) upgrade the same to 16GB (2chips of 8GB each), trust me a year down the line you will feel the need to upgrade.
  3. Get the original OS for windows
  4. Graphic card – Comes in 2 forms
    1. There is a standard card comes built-in on your motherboard
    2. There is a dedicated card provided to cater your graphic needs (this is essential as it will keep the RAM free for running other applications) For better performance 2GB minimum. (Do read performance reviews of the graphic card).

For Occasional users:

  1. SSD 256GB (optional)
  2. HDD minimum 500GB
  3. 8GB Standard RAM
  4. Original OS
  5. Graphic Card (optional)

Keeping these parameters in mind, you can have a basic idea of what you should be looking in your laptop apart from looks and aesthetics. Cause a pretty laptop that doesn’t perform as per expectation is more disappointing than having a good functioning laptop that is average in looks.
